Our Southgate Program Location will not hold classes this summer. Programs may resume in the fall. Please read the letter below from Coach Krieger

Dear First Tee Parents,

I would like to first thank you for your support of our program here at Southgate. The other volunteers and I thoroughly enjoy working with the children to help them become better golfers and better kids. Not being able to have them in our classes has been hard because we feel our program would help keep their minds on something that is fun and positive. The last few months have changed many things in all of our lives and our program also needs to make adjustments to the constantly changing environment.

In the spring, we began our program as scheduled but due to Covid-19, the governor of the state, local officials, and our First Tee headquarters, we had to cancel the rest of the session. For those of you that had students enrolled, we apologize that we could not continue. Today, we continue to wait to navigate through the new normal and what shape it will finally take. Therefore, as our fall session approaches we have been discussing how we could hold classes, IF we should hold classes this fall, what we would need to do in order to keep the children safe and finally, the many options available to us with the directives from the State and Local officials and our First Tee Headquarters. With many questions still existing at this time regarding the safety of the children and our volunteers and the uncertainty of being able to complete the session, we have decided to cancel our fall session and put all efforts into having the children back in 2021.

Therefore, while looking ahead, some changes that we will implement next year will help us improve the program regardless of the pandemic but in the long run, help us provide a better experience for the children. After safety, forefront on our agenda is to provide more opportunity for progression for the children from the PLAYer level into the PAR and BIRDIE levels.  In order to maintain safety, improve progression and while still having a fun, healthy and attractive environment, here are some of the areas that are being addressed.

  • The PLAYer group (the first level) being separated by ages – (7-10), (11-13) (14-17)

  • PAR and BIRDIE groups, due to smaller numbers, no age separation until higher numbers are reached

  • Class time reductions from 90 minutes to 60 minutes

  • More parental involvement in the sessions

  • Improving communications via social media (Facebook & Instagram)

  • Offering more sessions and more emphasis on progression and achievements

  • Offering more pre-certification options and opportunities to fill requirements for next level

  • Possible sessions beginning in January 2021

We are so appreciative of you bringing your children to us to help make them better golfers and people. We look forward to having you let us help coach your children in the future and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us for more details and discussions.
